Last updated October 12, 2026. Every price and rating below was checked that day on the vendor's own pricing page and Shopify App Store listing.

Intercom pairs a full helpdesk with Fin, its AI agent, and many large support teams run on it. You are probably not here to escape a bad product.

You are here because of the bill. Intercom charges per seat, then $0.99 for every Fin outcome, so the cost grows with both your team and your AI volume.

Most alternatives copy that shape at a different rate. A few drop one of the two meters. Below are nine Shopify-ready options, sorted by how they bill.

Intercom alternatives and competitors at a glance

Each row shows what the tool bills for and its one catch. Ratings come from each app's Shopify App Store listing on October 12, 2026:

Key Takeaways
  • Intercom bills on two meters: seats and Fin outcomes.
Seats cost $39 to $139 a month on its Shopify listing, and Fin adds $0.99 per outcome. A cheaper alternative is one where the meter that grows for your store costs less.
  • Most helpdesks copy the same two meters at a different AI rate.
Help Scout charges $0.75 per AI resolution, Re:amaze $0.85, Gladly $1.50 and Zendesk up to $2.00, each on top of seats.
  • The same store pays from $0 to $1,377 a month.
A store with 3 agents and 600 AI-resolved chats pays $711 on Intercom, $540 on Help Scout and $108.99 on Chatty at monthly list prices.
  • Chatty bills per AI conversation and never per seat or human chat.
Free covers 50 AI conversations a month. Pro is $68.99 for 500 and 10 team members, and extras cost $0.40 each with a spending limit you set.
  • Shopify Inbox is the free baseline to beat.
It is free, built by Shopify, and now includes an AI agent that learns from your catalog and policies.

Why merchants look for an Intercom alternative

Intercom is one of the best-known helpdesks for large support teams. On Shopify the picture is thinner. Its Fin and Intercom app has 18 reviews and 3.7 stars, with 50% at five stars and 22% at one star.

We read all 18 reviews on October 12, 2026. That is too small a sample to count themes, so treat these as examples:

  • Updates that break the store. In August 2026 a one-star reviewer wrote that after an update, "nothing is working on shopify. No widget showing, no chat available."
  • Order tools that stop short. Two four-star reviews from June 2025 say agents cannot enter or select a customer address when they create an order in Intercom.
  • Billing outside Shopify. The listing itself warns that Intercom may bill charges separately from your Shopify invoice.

The bigger reason is structural. Intercom's pricing page says its price "has two components": seats and usage. Fin's $0.99 counts when a customer confirms the fix, and also when they "don't ask for more help after Fin responds."

So the useful question is which meter grows for your store, and what each alternative charges for it.

What an Intercom alternative costs for the same store

List prices hide the real question. So we priced one store under every tool, using each vendor's monthly list prices on October 12, 2026.

The store has 3 support agents and 1,000 chat conversations a month. AI resolves 600 of them on its own, and the team handles the other 400.

ToolBills perWhere this store landsYou pay per month
Shopify InboxNothingFree$0
ChattyAI conversationPro $68.99 (500 AI conversations, 10 team members) + 100 extra at $0.40$108.99
CrispWorkspacePlus $295, because Crisp puts Essentials' AI credits at about 450 conversations$295
Help ScoutUser + AI resolutionStandard 3 × $30 + 600 resolutions at $0.75$540
Re:amazeTeam member + AI resolutionBasic 3 × $29 (15 resolutions included) + 585 at $0.85$584.25
IntercomSeat + Fin outcomeEssential 3 × $39 + 600 outcomes at $0.99$711
GorgiasTicket + automated interactionBasic $60 + 700 extra tickets ($280) + 600 interactions at $0.90 to $1.00about $880 to $940
GladlyTeam member + AI resolution3 × $120 + 600 resolutions at $1.50$1,260
ZendeskAgent + automated resolutionSuite Team 3 × $69 (15 resolutions included) + 585 at $2.00 pay-as-you-go$1,377

Two notes keep this fair. Intercom, Help Scout, Re:amaze, Gladly and Zendesk charge only when the AI resolves a chat. Chatty counts every conversation the AI replies to.

So if Chatty's AI replies to 800 chats but resolves only 600, its bill rises to $188.99. The resolution-billed tools stay where they are.

Tidio is left out because its Lyro price at this volume comes from a calculator, not a list price. Our Tidio alternatives guide prices it for a smaller store.

Intercom alternatives that bill per conversation, not per seat

These two drop the seat meter. Your cost follows how many shoppers chat, not how many people answer:

Chatty: AI that sells from your Shopify catalog

Homepage of the Chatty AI sales agent at chatty.net, built for Shopify stores

Chatty is the app we build, so weigh this section with that in mind. It bills per AI conversation, counted once when the chat ends. There is no seat fee, and a chat your team answers by hand never counts.

Its AI learns your Shopify products, custom answers, URLs and files. It recommends products as cards with an Add to cart button, which puts the item in the shopper's real Shopify cart.

Chatty also includes a Helpdesk on every plan, including Free. It turns support emails into tickets with a priority, an assignee and a status. Here is how it lines up:

  • Best for: Shopify stores where most chats are product questions before the purchase, and the team should grow without a seat bill.
  • Not a fit if: your team runs on SLA policies, macros and automation rules. Chatty's Helpdesk has none of those, so a dedicated helpdesk will serve you better.
  • Pricing: Free includes 50 AI conversations a month. Basic is $19.99 for 100 and 5 team members, Pro $68.99 for 500 and 10 members, and Plus $199 for 1,000 and unlimited members. Extras cost $0.40 each, up to a spending limit you set.
  • Rating: 4.9 from 1,877 reviews, with 96% at five stars. Many reviews name the support staff who helped them.

If you are weighing the two head to head, read our Chatty vs Intercom comparison. The full plan table lists every limit per plan.

Tidio: chat, AI and Flows priced as separate parts

Homepage of Tidio at tidio.com, showing its Lyro AI customer service agent

Tidio counts conversations instead of seats, in two meters. A Lyro conversation is one the AI handles, and a billable conversation is one where your team replies. Its pricing page also sells Lyro on its own, to run on top of another helpdesk.

Here is where it fits:

  • Best for: small teams that want chat, AI and automation flows in one app.
  • Not a fit if: you want one number to forecast. Human chats and AI chats move to bigger tiers separately.
  • Pricing: its Shopify listing sells Customer Service at $29 a month for 100 conversations, Flows at $29 and Lyro at $39. Tidio's own pricing page sells bundled tiers, from $24.17 a month billed yearly.
  • Rating: 4.8 from 1,354 reviews.
  • The catch: three meters instead of Intercom's two.

Intercom alternatives with the same two meters at a lower AI rate

These two keep seats plus a fee per AI resolution, like Intercom. The AI rate is lower, and both are helpdesks first:

Help Scout: a shared inbox with AI as an add-on

Homepage of Help Scout at helpscout.com, a shared inbox and customer support platform

Help Scout is built around a shared email inbox, with live chat, social channels and a knowledge base. Its Shopify app shows order details next to each conversation and lets agents edit, cancel or refund orders.

Here is where it fits:

  • Best for: email-heavy teams that want a clean inbox and a help center in one tool.
  • Not a fit if: you want AI included in the plan price.
  • Pricing: Standard is $25 per user a month billed yearly, Plus $45 and Pro $75, on Help Scout's pricing page. AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution. The free plan covers 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 knowledge base, with no AI.
  • Rating: 3.7 from 19 reviews, a small sample.
  • The catch: AI Answers is billed per resolution on top of every seat.

Re:amaze: a helpdesk with a few AI resolutions included

Homepage of Re:amaze at reamaze.com, a live chat and helpdesk platform for online stores

Re:amaze combines email, live chat, social, SMS and calls in one inbox, with a public FAQ and order details next to each conversation. Each plan includes a small number of AI Agent resolutions per user.

Here is where it fits:

  • Best for: small teams that want a full helpdesk with chat and an FAQ at a low seat price.
  • Not a fit if: AI will handle most of your volume, since only a few resolutions are included.
  • Pricing: Basic $29, Pro $49 and Plus $69 per team member a month, on Re:amaze's pricing page. Plans include 5, 10 or 20 AI resolutions per user a month, then $0.85 each.
  • Rating: 4.4 from 181 reviews.
  • The catch: at real AI volume, the resolution fee soon costs more than the seats.

Intercom alternatives with the same two meters at a higher AI rate

These two charge more per AI resolution than Fin does. They fit large teams that need what they include:

Gladly: retail-focused AI support for lean teams

Homepage of Gladly at gladly.ai, commerce AI for customer service

Gladly's AI resolves orders, returns and common questions on email and chat. When a customer needs a person, the agent sees the full conversation and past orders in one view.

Here is where it fits:

  • Best for: retail brands that want AI to resolve order and return questions with a small team.
  • Not a fit if: you want to compare prices on the vendor's site. Gladly's pricing page redirects to its homepage.
  • Pricing: on its Shopify App Store listing, the free plan covers 100 AI interactions and 1 seat. The paid plan charges $120 per team member a month, plus $1.50 per AI resolution and $0.25 per AI assist. You set a monthly spending cap.
  • Rating: 4.7 from 29 reviews.
  • The catch: $1.50 per resolution is about 50% more than Fin's $0.99.

Zendesk: enterprise ticketing with AI agents

Homepage of Zendesk at zendesk.com, a customer service and support platform

Zendesk is the enterprise standard for ticketing, SLAs and routing across many channels. Each Suite plan includes a few automated resolutions for its AI agents.

Here is where it fits:

  • Best for: large teams with strict SLAs and many channels.
  • Not a fit if: you are a small Shopify team, since you pay per agent and per extra resolution.
  • Pricing: Suite Team is $69 per agent a month, or $55 billed yearly, on Zendesk's pricing page. It includes 5 automated resolutions per agent a month, then $1.50 each committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go.
  • Rating: 3.2 from 94 reviews, with 30% at one star.
  • The catch: its Shopify listing warns that Zendesk may bill charges separately from your Shopify invoice.

Intercom alternatives that bill per ticket or per workspace

These two price the inbox, not each seat. That suits teams whose volume is steady from month to month:

Gorgias: a Shopify helpdesk built around tickets

Homepage of Gorgias at gorgias.com, a conversational AI helpdesk for eCommerce

Gorgias pulls Shopify order data into each ticket, and agents work email, chat and social from one place. Seats are unlimited from Basic up. On Basic and up, its AI Agent can run actions such as cancelling an order or applying a discount.

Here is where it fits:

  • Best for: support teams with several agents who handle order questions across email, chat and social.
  • Not a fit if: most of your chats are pre-sale product questions.
  • Pricing: Starter $10 a month for 50 tickets, Basic $60 for 300, Pro $360 for 2,000. The AI Agent adds $0.85 to $1.00 per automated interaction, by plan, on Gorgias's pricing page.
  • Rating: 4.3 from 704 reviews, with 10% at one star.
  • The catch: two meters. A busy month raises both your ticket count and your AI interactions.

Crisp: one flat price per workspace

Homepage of Crisp at crisp.chat, a customer messaging platform with live chat and AI chatbot

Crisp charges a flat monthly price per workspace. Seats come in bundles: 2 on Free, 4 on Mini, 10 on Essentials and 20 on Plus.

Here is where it fits:

  • Best for: small teams that want a predictable bill and many channels in one inbox.
  • Not a fit if: you want AI trained on your own content on a low plan. That starts at Essentials.
  • Pricing: Free, Mini $45, Essentials $95 and Plus $295 a month on Crisp's pricing page. Paid plans include AI credits that Crisp puts at around 90, 450 and 1,350 automated conversations.
  • Rating: 4.0 from 34 reviews, a small sample.
  • The catch: Crisp describes its AI credits only as "around" a number of conversations.

Shopify Inbox: the free Intercom alternative to beat

Shopify App Store listing of Shopify Inbox, an AI sales associate for the online store

Shopify Inbox is Shopify's own chat app, and it now puts an AI sales associate on your storefront. It learns from your catalog, policies and store content, and you set its tone and rules.

Any paid tool on this list has to beat it:

  • Best for: new stores that want free chat with AI and no extra bill.
  • Not a fit if: you need email tickets. Its App Store category is Chat, not Helpdesk, so plan on a separate tool for email.
  • Pricing: free on its Shopify App Store listing.
  • Rating: 4.6 from 5,810 reviews.
  • The catch: the agent personalizes replies with Shop preferences and purchase history only when the buyer signs in with Shop.

Which Intercom alternative fits your store

Start from the meter that grows fastest for you, then pick the tool that charges least for it:

  • AI handles most chats and your team is growing: Chatty, which bills neither seats nor human chats.
  • Email-heavy support with a help center: Help Scout or Re:amaze.
  • Order problems worked as tickets: Gorgias.
  • A fixed budget and steady volume: Crisp.
  • A large team with strict SLAs: Zendesk, or stay on Intercom.
  • No budget yet: Shopify Inbox.

Before you commit, run three checks:

  • Pull two numbers from Intercom: the seats you staff and the Fin outcomes you paid for last month.
  • Ask each vendor what counts as a resolution, and whether a chat the shopper abandons is billed.
  • Ask the AI ten real questions from your inbox during the free trial.

If the AI meter is the part you are pricing, our guide to AI chatbot pricing explains each model. For more ticket-based options, see our ticket-based helpdesk roundup.

FAQ

It depends on which of Intercom's two meters grows for you. Intercom charges per seat and $0.99 per Fin outcome. Help Scout charges $0.75 per AI resolution and Re:amaze $0.85, both on top of seats.

Chatty does not charge per seat and bills $0.40 per extra AI conversation. For a store with 3 agents and 600 AI-resolved chats a month, Intercom costs $711, Help Scout $540 and Chatty $108.99 at monthly list prices.

Yes. Shopify Inbox is free and includes an AI sales associate. Chatty's Free plan includes 50 AI conversations a month that reset every cycle, plus unlimited human chats.

Help Scout includes a knowledge base on every plan, including Free. Re:amaze includes a public and internal FAQ from its Basic plan.

Chatty includes an FAQs page on every plan, with unlimited FAQs that you can import and export. Its AI uses those FAQs when it replies to shoppers.

Yes. Intercom sells Fin on its own for teams that keep their current helpdesk. It costs $0.99 per outcome, with no seat costs, and a minimum monthly commitment such as 50 outcomes.

An outcome counts when a customer confirms the fix or does not ask for more help after Fin replies. It also counts when Fin completes a workflow.

Chatty has four plans, checked on October 12, 2026. Free is $0 with 50 AI conversations a month. Basic is $19.99 for 100, Pro is $68.99 for 500, and Plus is $199 for 1,000.

On paid plans, each extra AI conversation costs $0.40, and you can set a spending limit in the app. Human conversations are unlimited on every plan, and charges appear on your Shopify invoice.

Chatty includes a Helpdesk on every plan, including Free, with no extra fee. With Helpdesk ticket mode on for a support email address, incoming emails become tickets with a priority and an assignee.

Agents can reply, send and close, snooze, forward or add internal notes. Any chat can also be converted into a ticket on desktop.

Yes, for larger support teams. Intercom pairs a full helpdesk with Fin. It suits teams that want deep reporting and AI they pay for only when it closes a chat.

On the Shopify App Store, its Fin and Intercom app holds 3.7 stars from 18 reviews. That is a small sample, so test it on your own store.
